Kelso, Andreas and I rode at St.Helens the first weekend in April. The snowpack was really deep but fairly firm from a warm-up earlier in the week. I hadn’t been up there in two seasons and was really excited to play on the big open canvas that Helens can be on a sunny day.
We started our day with a long lap in a gully that held some soft snow. The turns were not high speed on steep terrain but the run dropped well over 1500 vertical feet which made up for the lack of serious challenge. After a near sled-totaling experience by Kelso, we retreated lower down to a mellow wind-lip lap. Easy sled access, soft snow and lots of turns for little work kept us lapping all afternoon.
