Along with most of the Northwest ski resorts, Mt. Bachelor opened for the season this Thanksgiving, 2012. A big system pushed into the Northwest days before the holiday weekend. A mixed bag of weather left the ski community cringing but in the end, the cold weather finished thing off with a bang.
Ben Ipsen and I drove to Bend on Wednesday night and hit Bachelor perfectly the next morning. There was about three feet of fresh snow form the past storm. Winds had done a nice job of packing the snow down and creating a base. Besides Bachelor being pretty flat, we found great turns throughout the day and rode some mid-weight, nice snow. Bachelor has the type of terrain where you sneak behind a tree and find a few great turns then power out, building up speed for the next interesting looking pocket. I found my turns and then some turkey. I’m very thankful for both.
